Welcome to the Art 5th Grade page! We will start the school year by introducing students to the Art Room. We will be going over how the classroom is set up, different procedures that they are expected to do, day to day routines, and how the helper table system works.
We are starting the year off with a collaborative pattern quilt! It will be displayed in the classroom for the rest of the year, possible for years to come, for all the schools students to see. For this project 5th graders must complete 3 different squares, each square will have a different level of difficulty involved with the pattern shown. They are going to be AWESOME!!! On the left is last years Pattern Quilt and its still up in the classroom for all to see! :D
Once students have finished all 3 of their Pattern Squares its time to work on Principles of Design! Student will be using the Principles of Design to create stunning Red Ribbon Week Posters for the School! Heres a fun video to illustrate why RRW is important.
2013 Red Ribbon Week posters
Students started off their clay unit with a clay play day!
Lets get dirty!!! Well at least up to our elbows with clay :) Its finally that time of the year to have some 3-D fun. We are going to learn a tad bit about a ceramic tradition of creating kiln gods. Kiln gods are tiny creatures that are created to relieve stress and to bring the artist good luck during the firing process. Each 5th grader must create a 2x3 inch creature that has to stand up by itself. Stay tuned for photos during the process of making these fun little guys.
2013 finished Student works! :D
Before we start an Optical Illusion project we need to make sure we have good shading skills. Investigating the grayscale and value. How can value make a person a more realistic artist? What can value show? We are going to make a bunch of crazy lines and then work on shading in the spaces to practice our gray scale skills.
Once finished with practicing shading students will learn the steps and techniques necessary to complete the Optical Illusion process! Make sure to watch closely so you don't miss any steps!
Last years Students Op Illustrations! They did awesome!!!
Chinese and English Calligraphy is what 5th graders are going to explore next! 1st students will investage the differences between these two Calligraphy styles and be allowed to practice using the pens and brushes with black india ink.
Last years student examples of the Great Wave!
All year we have been working on developing our art focus with short prompts from the Book "What It Is" By Lynda Barry. Now that we have worked on filling several pages out it is time to get them put together. Students will be using a paper painting process to create their covers. They must use their knowledge of color theory to create the colors they want with a paint wiping method.
Time is almost out so we want to incorporate graphic design skills into our lessons! Students will be learning about the program Adobe Photoshop and getting to work with the different tools in the program. With the knowledge of the tools students then will be able to manipulate and create new and different works of ART!
